Thank you Derek for your post and your concerns are legitimate.

With these particular CME programs, the New Jersey Academy of Family Physicians is not asking for, permitting, or collecting any data that could be used to reveal the identity of a particular patient. There are no patient interviews or chart reviews conducted by anyone other than the treating physician. Rather, these programs collect information about what clinical practice steps physicians are employing to treat or manage a particular condition, compare them to consensus guidelines (and other sources), and help with recommendations for quality improvement plans. The hope is that by providing a tool to assist physicians in analyzing their practice and implementing quality improvement plans, patient care may improve.

These programs are focused solely upon quality improvement and should not be considered formal clinical trials or studies where IRB approval would be appropriate.

Since our firm just developed the technology, you can also contact NJAFP with any additional questions at: (609) 394-1711.

Thank you again for your thoughtful feedback! Jeremy

I haven't been all the way through the modules of course, but I really like the simplified approach you are taking and the "introduction" of PI concepts to physicians--for many these are new concepts.

I'm concerned about HIPAA compliance and IRB approvals. How could a physician enter patient data into this system without getting the patient's formal permission? Also, what about IRB approvals? How did you deal with these patient confidentiality issues?
