EthosCE Learning Management System: Moodle Presentation

Our team has been working extensively with Moodle Learning Management System for a number of years to support our medical association, university, and hospital clients’ continuing medical education (CME) and training programs.  Moodle is widely considered the industry-leading open source learning management system and is extraordinarily powerful.  This free software enables organizations to easily create, manage, and deliver live and Web-based training, assessments, and reporting through a Web browser.  In addition to those common LMS features, you can leverage a wealth of new modules and features contributed by thousands of developers in the Moodle Community.

In 2007, we decided to further extend the features of Moodle by integrating it with Drupal Content Management System.  The result: an enterprise-level content-learning management system called EthosCE.  EthosCE is a powerful, highly customizable Web platform designed to streamline the administration and delivery of CME and training programs for healthcare professionals.  Now, organizations such as American Society of Anesthesiologists, United Healthcare, and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine Office of Continuing Medical Education, can easily manage their education programs within one Web-based application.  And, as an open source application, there are no annual licensing fees or restrictions on the number of courses, learners, and administrators.

The below presentation provides a nice overview of the evolution of Moodle and its wealth of features.  The advent of open source applications, such as EthosCE, Moodle, and Drupal, truly represent a giant leap forward for e-learning technologies designed for the healthcare community.

OptumHealthEducation.com Leverages EthosCE LMS for CME Management

We are pleased to announce the launch of OptumHealthEducation.com, a full featured CME Website built upon our EthosCE Learning Management System.  The Website offers a wealth of CME accredited activities to physicians, pharmacists, nurses, and other allied healthcare professionals.  Currently, there are CME activities available across seven different specialty areas including: cardiology, infectious disease, internal medicine, neurology, oncology, pain management, and psychiatry.

OptumHealth Education selected EthosCE LMS to support their CME enterprise based upon the system’s robust features, customizable interface, browser-based administration, the open source licensing model, and our firm’s expertise in medical education technologies.  Using an agile development process, our Web designers and engineers worked closely with OptumHealth to create an engaging, easy-to-use learning environment that:

  • Delivers CME content based upon personal profiles and preferences.
  • Provides easy access to a wealth of live and online CME activities.
  • Creates a complete “My CME” transcript of all enrolled and completed activities.
  • Streamlines registration, assessment, and certificate processing.

EthosCE: Mobile Text Messaging App for Tracking Live Meeting Attendance to be Presented at the Alliance for CME

I am pleased to announce that we have been invited with our colleagues at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine Office of Continuing Medical Education to present our experience using our EthosCE SMS Text Module for tracking attendance at Regularly Scheduled Series (Grand Rounds, Live Meetings) at the 36th Annual Alliance for CME Meeting to be held on January 26th-29th, 2011 in San Francisco, CA.  I will be presenting with Mila Kostic, Zal Agus, MD, and Rod Campbell where we will describe our findings using our mobile SMS text messaging module to streamline attendance tracking for live meetings  versus other methods.  We are presently implementing our open-source EthosCE Learning Management System for the School’s CME initiatives.  Given EthosCE’s roots in Drupal CMS and Moodle LMS open-source software communities, we have also contributed back a Mobivity gateway for the Drupal SMS Framework Module.

TITLE: An Evaluation of SMS Text Messaging Technology for Managing Attendance for Academic Regularly Scheduled Series

OBJECTIVES: [1] Describe the rationale for comparing SMS text messaging vs. other methods of keeping attendance at RSSs.  [2] Demonstrate the SMS text messaging technology platform, algorithms, and underlying learning management platform. [3] Discuss the finding from the feasibility study, including participants’ response, considerations for effective implementation, and outcomes data.

METHODS: Presentation, demonstration, and case study discussion will illustrate the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine Office of Continuing Medical Education experience implementing an SMS text-messaging platform for tracking RSS participant attendance.

KEY POINTS: In an era of shrinking budgets and resources, healthcare organizations are looking to technology to minimize costs associated with administering continuing medical education.  The ubiquitous nature of mobile devices and SMS text messaging capabilities provides CME providers with a novel method to tracking attendance at live CME events.  The University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine Office of Continuing Medical Education implemented a pilot program comparing mobile SMS text messaging with other methods of attendance tracking for RSS portion of this large academic CME program.  Join us as we discuss our technological approach, practical considerations for the CME enterprise, and our findings.

EthosCE Learning Management System Version 2.0 Released

We are pleased to announce the release of Version 2.0 of our EthosCE Learning Management System for continuing medical education and training.  The new version provides a wealth of new features and enhancements that promise to further streamline and enhance the CME enterprise including:

  • Addition of numerous fields added to course page to comply with ACCME PARS Report

University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill BHRP selects EthosCE as Continuing Education LMS

We are pleased to announce that the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Behavioral Healthcare Resource Program has selected our EthosCE Learning Management System to support their continuing medical education activities for healthcare professionals across North Carolina.  Under the agreement, our firm will retire BHRP’s current LMS, migrate legacy data on participants and educational outcomes measures, and implement an EthosCE Web application that is engaging and intuitive.  Using EthosCE, BHRP will be able to centralized program registration, offer live and online courses, conduct assessments, and generate CE certificates and report.  Health care professionals will be able to engage through high-quality accredited content, Web 2.0 offerings and community forums.  Our robust e-commerce engine will manage all course purchases for individuals, groups, and institutions.

By selecting EthosCE, BHRP will be able to reduce administration costs, have a highly professional, robust Website and learning management platform, and not have to pay heavy licensing fees normally associated with proprietary systems.  We are very excited about working with our new partners and helping to advance the quality of mental health care in North Carolina!
